Beginner Hose Guide

STAMPED is an acronym corresponding to the 7 major areas of information required to provide a correct hose assembly:
Note: Each area of information may require further clarification or additional details
The information provided below is a condensed version of the Hose Safety Handbook published by NAHAD

S stands for SIZE; I.D, length and any O.D constraints

  • overall length should be specified to include fittings
  • tolerances need to be specified if special requirements exist
Note: Under-sizing hose assemblies results in higher flow rates of the medium. The ensuing turbulence causes loss of pressure, noise and increased temperatures. This can be detrimental to the entire system.

T stands for TEMPERATURE of the material conveyed and environmental conditions

  • Temperature affects service life
  • Temperature resistance depends on medium
  • Continuous (average) and minimum / maximum temperatures have to be specified
  • Note if flame resistance or flammability will be an issue
  • Protect assemblies with heat shields near hot surfaces
  • Specify potential fluctuation in temperatures
  • Do not use hose assemblies for any medium over specified temperature range
  • Maximum assembly working pressures will decrease as temperatures increase
Note: Continuous operation at high temperatures can affect the service life of the hose and reliable seating of the fittings. Hose assemblies will have a longer service life if not continually used at the limits of their working pressure, bend radius and temperature range.

A stands for APPLICATION, outlines service conditions

  • Configuration, routing or installation (add sketch if applicable)
  • Quantify anticipated movement
  • Intermittent or continuous service
  • Indoor or outdoor use (chemicals in environment)
  • Excessive abrasion
  • Electrical conductivity requirements
  • Flexing: Intermittent, continuous or static

M stands for the MATERIAL or MEDIA being conveyed, type and concentration

  • Chemical name and concentration (MSDS information)
  • Any special specifications or agency requirements (e.g. USCG, FDA)
  • Exposure time: Is media flowing or sitting in the hose for long periods
  • Will the hose be submerged or exposed to chemicals externally

P stands for PRESSURE to which the assembly is exposed (positive and negative)

  • Assembly working pressure must be equal to or greater than system pressure
  • Pressure spikes greater than hose maximum working pressure will shorten hose life
  • Temperature and vacuum implications
  • Do not use beyond manufacturer’s stated working pressure

E stands for ENDS; style, type, orientation and attachment methods

  • Uncoupled or coupled hose; hose with built-in fittings
  • Specify end type
  • Materials and dimensions (carbon steel, brass, stainless steel)
  • Conductivity requirements

D stands for Delivery

  • Specify customer requirements
  • Testing / tagging requirements (certification: USCG, CRN, CGA)
  • Packing and shipment requirements
